Brierley Hill 3rd December.

This was a day of fun, excitement and birthday surprises.
As the kids and their parents filled the hall one thing was certain that this was not going to be a short day of competition. No fewer than 19 Junior couples turned out for this last 10 dance of the calendar year. The cold morning was soon forgotten as the children began their warm ups, stretches and routine rehearsals.

The morning started with the obligatory introductions of the judges, scrutineers a nd music maker. This was welcomed with clapping and cheers from the floor level and the balcony above. Directly following this was the first round of the ballroom section of the EADA Junior 10 dance event. Dancing in two heats it was apparent that the job in the judges’ hands was not going to be an easy one. All the dancing was of a very high standard. From these 19 super couples only 12 in each dance would be recalled and the determination of these youngsters was visible from the moment they stepped out onto the dance floor. The semi final was even more difficult to choose from and even the seasoned finalists were left biting their nails in the hope of their inclusion into the finals.

Next to grace us were the juvenile and although there were only three couples we weren’t to be disappointed with the level of dancing that was presented to us. It was great to watch some super basic footwork.

Back to the juniors and it was time for a change in tempo, mood and costume. After all the years that I have been following my children’s dancing it still amazes me that we can have so many different styles and colours on the floor. We all thought the ballroom section was difficult enough to judge but the Latin proved even more of a challenge for our dedicated adjudicators. The younger juniors certainly gave the older ones a run for their money.

As the junior and juvenile events were coming to a close we were treated to the amateur Latin competition. This was of particular interest to some of our juniors who are due to join the adult ranks in the very near future. They watched intensely at every move, cheered for their favourite couples and hopefully learnt a bit more today from their soon to be peers. For one junior couple this will be sooner rather than later.

The end of the day had arrived for the younger dancers and all that was left to do was to announce the winners and hand out their prizes but before this took place there was still enough time to embarrass one of these young couples. As the candles on the cake were lit the compa re announced two birthdays and invited this couple to come up to the front. Red faced and laughing, David Ellis and Danielle Grover sauntered to the stage as the hall erupted in verses of Happy Birthday. This was the perfect end to their successful junior career.

David, Danielle and a Birthday cake!

On a personal note I would like to thank all the teachers and trainers for their continued support and dedication.
