Hazel
Newbury MBE joins Egham Finals Training
report by Toni 17/06/07
We are in the 5th “term” of finals/stamina training
at Egham and couples (otherwise now known as Team ‘O’)
have really begun to show an improvement in their performance
and stamina. In May, we invited along Hazel Newbury to give us
some
ideas on attitude towards performance in competition.

We started the evening with the usual structured warm up which
was echoed with Hazel’s cheers of support and ‘get
on with it’. After a swift team talk all couples performed
their solo dances and then Hazel gave ideas on approach towards
the first round.
The first round was in two heats and consisted of Hazel running
around after couples who were slacking off. It was very impressive
how she learnt
everyone’s names so fast and was cheering
them on along with the rest of the group. Team member Colin Adams
said “you have no idea how good it feels to be dancing around
a floor and have Hazel Newbury cheering your name’’.

Hazel really picked up on our team spirit and joined in with
all the fun … unless you dropped your hold or stopped
that is! After the Semi Final Hazel got an exhausted ‘Team
O’ lying
down on yoga mats and walked them through a visualisation exercise.
They were visualizing dancing their way through Blackpool,
dancing the best they ever had. Two members were so relaxed
that they
actually fell asleep (names removed to prevent embarrassment!).
It took
a few of them a while to get going again before they could
dance their final.

Team ‘O’ is now 16 couples strong and is now at
full capacity, However if you would like to join the waiting
list
please contact us via the EADA webmaster.
